Well day 4 of the Olympics is over and again China has found gold medals coming their way and also the great Michael Phelps has bagged himself his 3rd gold medal of the games and his 9th gold of his career.

Well I know everybody and everybody is going on about Phelps but he is nothing short of astonishing, at 23 years of age he currently holds 9 gold medals to his name and I can pretty much guaranty you that in the early hours of tomorrow morning; whilst most of us will be asleep, he will out-swim the 7 others vying for the gold in the 200m butterfly. If he is to go on and win the gold he will make a large piece of history, in becoming the first person ever to have won 10 Olympic Gold medals. What an achievement that would be. The thing that makes this achievement all the more impressive and also all the more scary is what I mentioned before, the guy is only 23 years old. He could potentially go on to another 3 Olympics and be still in his prime.

He is going to make such a big impact in the years to come, he has already jointly got the most gold medals ever won by an Olympian, and by the time he decides to hang up his swimming cap I wouldn’t be surprised if he was wearing 25 Gold medals around his neck. He is already the Michael Schumacher of swimming and in a decade’s time he is going to be the Schumacher/Senna/Fangio of swimming all combined together.
It’s not just the swimming I’ve been interested in watching, today I thoroughly enjoyed watching Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson superbly come back from 12-17 down to win 21-19 in the third and final set of their tie against China’s champions Gao Ling and Zheng Bo. Emms and Robertson won the won the first set convincingly 21-16 and then carried on their dominance into the first half of the second set. When the British pair were leading 8-3 I was thinking ‘ok they have this one wrapped up now’ and I was correct until the second half of the set when the Chinese champs notched it up a few gears and came back to win the set 16-21.

The Chinese started the third set where they left off in the second, dominating the British duo. It was quite annoying to see them picking up the pace and just outwitting the brits but I never gave up hope of a comeback. They could have saved me a near heart attack and come back earlier but like all our athletes we always seem to do things the hard way. The Chinese reached 12-17 and from somewhere Emms and Robertson managed to win seven points in a row to bring the game to a photo finish. The third and final set finished off 21-19 and all I can say is well done Gail and Nathan because they really did try their best and never gave up, which paid off in the end.

So you might be thinking that I’ve just been sitting in front of the tele all day watching our British athletes with their mixed successes over the last few days. Well you may be partly correct but I have been thinking of a few ideas. I watched one brit getting knocked out of the women’s singles archery by other fellow countrywomen. Whilst watching I couldn’t help but come up with a few ideas of how to improve the TV viewer’s excitement, a few of the ideas were simple ideas like the archers should get shot in the face with water if they get a 6 or something similar. Also maybe even get an electric shock if they shoot so poorly to manage a 5 or below. Now you may be thinking well that would be mean to them but I don’t think it will, because I believe it will improve their accuracy somewhat. Also the comedy value of these highly professional athletes making a mockery of themselves.

Asus today introduced the world’s first overclocking version of the latest NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT GPU – the ASUS EN9500GT TOP/DI/512M graphics card. With this superlative variant, users will enjoy 103% performance boosts for gaming experiences. In addition, almost all of the EN9500GT Series models will come with the exclusive Glaciator Fansink to keep GPU temperatures up to 13ºC cooler than reference designed boards. Besides this extreme cooling capacity, the Glaciator Fansink is also ultra quiet with operating levels of only 25dB – almost imperceptible in a quiet room; and caters to users who require maximum cooling without excessive fan rotation noise.

The Asus EN9500GT TOP/DI/512M delivers GPU, shader, and memory clock performance boosts from 550MHz up to 700MHz, from 1375MHz up to 1750MHz, and from 1600MHz up to 2016MHz respectively. This creates an elevated performance that raises the EN9500GT TOP’s 3DMark Vantage High Preset score – from 689 to 1401 – to an astonishing 103% improvement in speed when compared to any other reference designed board.

Kyocera has developed a new fine ceramic with a color that closely resembles 18-karat gold. The material has been created by raising the brightness level approximately 5% (approx. 3.6 points) above previous gold ceramic products. The three inherent attributes of color are luminosity, hue and saturation. Luminosity refers to the visually perceived brightness or darkness of a color as a percentage. In developing the new gold fine ceramic material, Kyocera increased the luminosity of its previous gold fine ceramic – one of 18 colored fine ceramics provided by Kyocera – while retaining the material’s outstanding hardness. This made it possible to more closely recreate the texture and color of 18-karat gold.

The new gold fine ceramic is a sophisticated addition to Kyocera’s lineup of colored ceramics that are used as decorative materials for watches, mobile phones and other premium accessories. Kyocera will pursue upscale applications for the elegant gold material in new markets worldwide

Panasonic today announced the company’s plan to construct a new flagship lithium-ion battery plant in Osaka City. With two other existing manufacturing bases in Osaka Prefecture and Wakayama Prefecture, Panasonic will integrate the new plant to reinforce the production of rechargeable batteries in Japan. The new plant will be the main manufacturing site, employing an integrated manufacturing system controlling everything from electrode production, cell assembly and charge-discharge testing to packaging and shipping. Especially, the electrode production facilities will ensure the safety of lithium-ion battery products as well as a safe manufacturing process.

The new plant will be strategically located in Osaka City to provide logistical advantages when working with its other plants in Osaka and Wakayama Prefectures. Making MBI one of the world’s top manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries, the plant will help to accelerate the company’s growth strategy to meet market needs and take advantage of its technological prowess in manufacturing safe batteries with high energy capacity. The factory aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% based on the basic unit from the level of fiscal year 2009 ending March 2009.

Osaka, Japan - Matsushita Battery Industrial Co., Ltd. (MBI), a consolidated subsidiary of Matsushita Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (MEI [NYSE symbol: MC]) known for its Panasonic brand products, today announced the company’s plan to construct a new flagship lithium-ion battery plant in Osaka City. With two other existing manufacturing bases in Osaka Prefecture and Wakayama Prefecture, MBI will integrate the new plant to reinforce the production of rechargeable batteries in Japan.

The plant will be strategically located in Osaka City to provide logistical advantages when working with its other plants in Osaka and Wakayama Prefectures.

MBI will invest about 100 billion yen in the new plant, which will be built in two phases. The first phase construction will begin in December 2008 with the aim of commencing electrode production in October 2009 and battery cell production in April 2010 with a capacity of 300 million battery cells. When the second phase construction is completed, the new plant will have a total production capacity of about 600 million lithium-ion battery cells per year (50 million cells per month).

In addition, the company plans to invest about 23 billion yen to improve the productivity of the existing two plants. With a total investment of 123 billion yen in these domestic plants, the company aims to firmly establish a global manufacturing system that can satisfy the growing and diversifying global market needs. This requires the cooperating of domestic plants with the overseas plant in Wuxi, China, capable of producing batteries in various varieties and volumes.

Demand for environmentally-friendly, rechargeable batteries shows notable increases not only in major markets like Europe, the U.S. and Japan, but also in emerging markets like BRIC countries, as demand for mobile devices like laptop PCs and cell phones are on the rise.

Making MBI one of the world’s top manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries, the plant will help to accelerate the company’s growth strategy to meet market needs and take advantage of its technological prowess in manufacturing safe batteries with high energy capacity.

The company aims to build a safe, secure and environmentally-friendly factory by implementing a safe manufacturing environment and maintaining high energy efficiency. The factory aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% based on the basic unit* from the level of fiscal year 2009 ending March 2009.

LG Display announced on Sunday that it will cut LCD output by 10 percent by August and joined the global trend among liquid crystal display panel manufacturers of scaling down production. Taiwanese LCD makers CPT, CMO and AUO have led the production cuts in recent days as IT firms are reducing LCD panel orders on low demand in the second half, which is lowering panel prices. An LG Display official cited concerns about excess supply in July and the summer slow season in August in North America and Europe. He said the decision is in line with the company’s principle of flexibility in addressing global market situations.

Samsung Electronics said Thursday that it is keeping an eye on the market situation but has no plan to cut production for the time being.

Recruit Co Ltd (a human resources and classifieds company in Japan) is delivering advertising videos for the cafes and restaurants in the underground mall of Tokyo Station by using the Scent-emitting LCD Display System. The system, developed by NTT Communications Corp (a subsidiary of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Corporation) emits appetizing aromas along with the advertising videos shown on a 42-inch LCD display. In front of the LCD display, there are coupon books that can be used at the restaurants advertised in the videos. So, the purpose of the system is to attract people by videos and scents, and to make them grab a copy of the coupon books. This experiment is being conducted to verify the system’s effect of drawing customers.

Also, in this experiment, Recruit utilizes the “Commercializer,” Recruit’s service of making advertising videos for free, to reduce the time and cost required to create the video contents. The Commercializer enables to easily make advertising videos just by using pictures and texts on the templates available on the company’s Web site. Recruit began this experiment July 18, 2008, and plans to continue it until Aug 1.

Got a big archiving project you’ve been itching to do? Pioneer’s latest development could help you keep all your data in one nice, little circular package. The Japanese electronics maker has been working on an optical disc, which, like Blu-ray, can store 25GB of data in a single layer. But Pioneer says it’s one-upped the high-definition format to the sixteenth degree. The company announced today that it has a single disc that contains 16 layers of storage, at 25GB each. That adds up to 400GB of data capable of being stored on a single disc.

Blu-ray comes in single layer (25GB) and dual-layer (50GB) flavors. Pioneer does say that because the lens specification for reading the discs is similar to Blu-ray, “it is possible to maintain compatibility” between its disc and Blu-ray discs. That’s not saying it will be compatible, but it would make sense since Pioneer is one of the original Blu-ray Disc Association members. However, plans for that archiving project will have to be put on pause if you want to use this technology. Pioneer is going to demonstrate it at an industry conference next week, but for now the disc is read-only. Eventually, they’ll add write capability as well.

In honor of today’s Firefox 3 release, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer team gave a cake to Mozilla. The tasty treat, which prominently displays IE’s blue “e” icon, just arrived here at Mozilla headquarters in Mountain View.

The cake congratulates Mozilla on shipping Firefox 3 and expresses love from the IE team. Microsoft’s IE developers also sent a cake to Mozilla in 2006 following the release of Firefox 2, so this is clearly becoming a tradition.

Portal jokes aside, the cake is a very friendly gesture of goodwill. As we have noted recently, the Internet Explorer team could learn a lot from Mozilla. Closer cooperation between Microsoft and Mozilla on standards and web innovation would be a big win for everyone. But until Microsoft gets its act straightened out, Mozilla will be eating Internet Explorer’s marketshare in addition to cake.

What did the first quasars look like? The nearest quasars are now known to be supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies. Gas and dust that falls toward a quasar glows brightly, sometimes outglowing the entire home galaxy. The quasars that formed in the first billion years of the universe are more mysterious, though, with even the nature of the surrounding gas still unknown.

Above, an artist’s impression shows a primordial quasar as it might have been, surrounded by sheets of gas, dust, stars and early star clusters. Exacting observations of three distant quasars now indicate emission of very specific colors of the element iron. These Hubble Space Telescope observations, which bolster recent results from the WMAP mission, indicate that a whole complete cycle of stars was born, created this iron, and died within the first few hundred million years of the universe.

When the temperature starts to rise there’s nowhere better to chill out than by the pool, but not all pools are equal: some swimming pools are destinations in and of themselves. From amazing infinity pools at resorts in exotic locations to visually compelling pools with awesome waterfalls and special effects built in, these are designed to make you feel cool both in and out of the water. Here’s a look at 15 of the most luxurious swimming pools you’ll find anywhere in the world.

Perivolas Hotel, Santorini

Perivolas Hotel: It is difficult to tell where the pool ends and the waters of the Aegean Sea begin since the infinity pool at this Santorini hotel appear to stretch all the way to the horizon. The accommodation here are designed to rejuvenate you completely, aided by what is widely considered to be one of the best hotel pools in the world. What an idyllic place to spend a holiday!

Six Senses Hideaway Zighy Bay, Oman

Six Senses Hideaway Zighy Bay: If you’ve never considered taking a trip to Oman then you probably didn’t know that you could stay a place as luxurious as this! Since it has only been open since in 2008, you could be among the first visitors to take advantage of the opportunity. There are seventy nine different pool villas so you can really retreat into relaxation in a private area all your own. Yes, you read that correctly. Seventy nine pools.

Joule Hotel, Dallas

Joule Hotel: There have been rumours about this amazing hotel swimming pool for several years (originally under the name Elan Hotel) but the place hasn’t actually opened to the public yet. It is due to open this year and crowds are sure to flock to it for the chance to check out the amazing opportunity to swim in the pool, which is located ten stories up and literally hangs off of the edge of the building. The end of it is made from glass so you can essentially swim off the side of the hotel to get a view of Dallas.

Banyan Tree Hotel, Seychelles

Banyan Tree Hotel: Another astounding infinity pool that stretches its way right to the beach is the one located at this hotel in the stunning island nation of Seychelles. It’s not often that you’re going to get to relax in the wonderful waters of a beautiful pool that overlooks the Indian Ocean just steps away so don’t neglect to take advantage of this opportunity if it ever comes along.

Four Seasons Resort Bali, Jimbaran Bay

Four Seasons Resort Bali: To get to the awe-inspiring infinity pool on the top floor of this resort hotel, you’re going to need to cross a wooden bridge. From the pool, you’ll be able to absorb the beauty of the surrounding Balinese jungle and over the beautiful Jimbaran Bay area.

One&Only Reethi Rah Resort, Maldives

One&Only Reethi Rah Resort: The Maldive Islands are a stunning destination which is perfect for relaxation because of the fact that the beautiful beaches offer plenty of activity on the water. However, you don’t have to leave the luxury of your resort to have a terrific water experience since this place has an amazing infinity pool that can caress your body into relaxation. The massive pool is shaded by tropical trees and leads right out into the ocean so you can go adventuring or just lounge around and relax. A poolside bar adds to the fun.

Intercontinental Hotel, Hong Kong

Intercontinental Hotel: The ideal way to enjoy the pool at this hotel is to book yourself a stay in The Presidential Suite which is 7,000 square feet in size and includes a 2,500 square foot terrace where the private pool is located. However, there are multiple pools to choose from at this hotel and all of them are amazing. There’s a basic-but-beautiful outdoor pool inspired by the art of feng shui but what most people want to check out is the trio of infinity pools that are each heated to different temperatures to suit different people at different times.

Wynn Hotel, Las Vegas

Wynn Hotel: There are several different pools to choose from at The Wynn and all of them are luxurious as you would expect from one of the best hotels in Las Vegas. But the best is the one that’s only designed for high-rollers. These people spend a lot of money in the poolside casino while topless women swim around to provide Vegas-style entertainment.

Crown Macau, Taipa Island

Crown Macau: Hotel ratings technically only go up to five star but there are a handful of resorts that call themselves six star hot spots because they know that what they have to offer is better than the best out there. This is one of those places and the pool is one of the many things that adds to its luxury.

Gallery Hotel, Singapore

Gallery Hotel: This uber-hip design hotel has a lot of cool features but the one to really enjoy is the spectacular pool that overhangs the hotel. Three of the walls of this pool are glass so it gives you a really unique view of the city and the Singapore River below while you swim.

Hotel Habita, Mexico City

Hotel Habita: What better way to get a view of the largest city in the world than from the relaxing position of your boutique hotel’s rooftop pool? The pool’s also got some really cool design features that make it a pleasure to lounge in even without the stunning view

La Casa Que Canta, Mexico

La Casa Que Canta: This hotel has one of the world’s coolest infinity pools, featuring rounded ledges so you can sit right at the edge of the edgeless pool and look out over the Pacific Ocean. This isn’t the only pool that you’ll find at the hotel, though. Some of the suites have their own private pools and there is a free form saltwater pool with a jacuzzi attached to it that can add additional relaxation to your already delightful stay.

The Crater at Homestead Resort, Utah

The Crater at Homestead Resort: Utah is in the middle of the United States, nowhere near an ocean but you can enjoy all sorts of ocean-type activities (scuba diving, for example) in the underground pool at Homestead Resort. It’s a natural attraction formed from a limestone wall that’s filled with geothermal water. It’s healing, relaxing and totally amazing to experience.

Gran Hotel Central, Barcelona: Many of the world’s infinity pools lead straight out into the ocean. This one is a totally urban infinity pool located on the rooftop of a hotel in the center of Barcelona. You’ll feel like you’re absolutely on top of the world at this place!

Intercontinental Tahiti Resort, French Polynesia

Intercontinental Tahiti Resort: The only thing that can enhance the beauty of an already-idyllic location is a resort that has a truly beautiful pool that compliments and pays homage to the surrounding environment. If this part of the world could have gotten any better, it did so when the pools of this resort became an additional part of its landscape.

The BCM4323 is the world’s first single-chip 802.11n solution for universal serial bus (USB) adapters. The newest member of Broadcom’s Intensi-fi wireless LAN (WLAN) family enables very small and cost-effective USB adapters that consumers can use to connect PCs, TVs, set-top boxes, personal video recorders, and other devices to a Wi-Fi™ network.
