Sanyo announced today that it has reached a definitive agreement with Kyocera Corporation (Kyocera) to transfer its mobile phone business, following the announcement on October 11, 2007 of a basic agreement to begin transfer negotiations. In order to meet the best interests of the business and its stakeholders, Sanyo has explored all options regarding the further expansion and development of the business, and has concluded that a transfer of the business to Kyocera would be the ideal solution for both business value and ease-of-succession.The agreement announced today also outlines that the current 2,000 employees in Sanyo’s mobile phone business (excluding contract workers and temp agency staff) will be allowed to remain and work for Kyocera following the transfer.

Regarding the branding on the handsets, Kyocera will continue to use the Sanyo brand on handsets both domestically and overseas. It will also continue its own brand, and the phone business will be developed using both the Kyocera and Sanyo brands.

Sanyo announced today that it will establish a new ‘Advanced Photovoltaics Development Center’ within its Gifu Plant in Japan. The plant, located in Anpachi, Gifu prefecture, houses the Solar Ark, a large-scale solar power generation facility that stands as a monument to the world of Sanyo’s commitment and efforts to create a clean energy-based society. Sanyo is currently advancing the development of its solar technology, primarily focused on its proprietary HITsolar cells, at the Advanced Energy Research Center of R&D Headquarters and at the Solar Division of the Clean Energy Company. The ‘Advanced Photovoltaics Development Center’ will promote the development of next-generation thin-film silicon solar cells aiming at reducing the cost of solar power generation to match costs as low as electricity charges applied to home-use.

Aiming at a huge increase in sales, especially in the overseas market, Sanyo will invest 80 billion yen in HIT solar cells over the next three fiscal years and increase production capacity to 650 MW by FY2010, up 250% from the current amount.

Sanyo today announces that together with The Coca-Cola, it has developed a new, non-fluorocarbon type cassette unit that employs a natural refrigerant (CO2) compressor, and includes an efficient Energy Management System, to be used for beverage coolers. Sanyo will begin supplying these new cassette units to Coca-Cola in March 2008.Coca-Cola, as an official sponsor of the Beijing Olympics set to start in August 2008, has announced in September this year that it will use in all Olympic venues highly efficient cooling equipment that do not use hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs), a potent greenhouse gas. To support this effort, Sanyo developed a compressor utilizing its technological prowess capable of utilizing a gas found everywhere in the atmosphere in nature, CO2.

Together with Coca-Cola North America, a new refrigeration system incorporating this new compressor was developed. As a result, a new non-fluorocarbon cassette was developed, which realizes high efficiency and durability globally. With this cooperative effort, Coca-Cola North America will be able to start a new market of non-fluorocarbon beverage coolers.
