Google is introducing an online business software package designed to make it easier for people in the same organization to share documents and information. The free “Team Edition” software, scheduled to debut Thursday, represents the Internet search leader’s latest attempt to attract more users to free applications, which poses a potential threat to rival Microsoft Corp.’s highly profitable word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and calendar programs. More than 500,000 businesses have signed up to use Google’s applications, according to figures to be released Thursday by the Mountain View-based company.

Some businesses pay $50 extra per user for a souped-up version of the applications, but the fees so far account for only a sliver of Google’s $16.6 billion in annual revenue. Google last year collected $181 million for software sales and other services besides online advertising.

NEC, Japan has announced the development of automatic translation software for mobile phones, which can provide Japanese to English translations of phrases useful for travel. For processing, the software does not require a server or any other external devices but only a processor for mobile phones. If a Japanese phrase is spoken into the handset, the text of the phrase will be displayed on the screen using voice recognition. It takes about one second for a voice recognition result to be displayed after the phrase is spoken. Then, if translation is commanded, the text will be translated into English and displayed in about one second. The software consists of a voice recognition engine, a translation engine and the middleware that controls these two engines.

NEC tested the software on its “SIMPURE N1″ mobile phone, which was released from NTT DoCoMo Inc in 2006, and confirmed its successful operation, NEC said. The middleware that controls the voice recognition and translation engines allows the translation capability to be accessed and used though other mobile phone applications such as mailer and browser.

Finder Browser

Posted In: Mac, Software by Alex

Ever wished there was a simple and free way to browse your images within the finder on your Mac? well if thats the case then check out this finder browser. It basically adds “Browse Images” in the context menu which if clicked opens a image view window that looks integrated within the finder. After installing you will have to log out and then back in again for it to fully install.

Also a nice thing about finder browser is it doesnt affect your file associations so if you double click on a image it will still open in the editor you wish it to. Good touch and makes it perfect and everybody should download it.
