What did the first quasars look like? The nearest quasars are now known to be supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies. Gas and dust that falls toward a quasar glows brightly, sometimes outglowing the entire home galaxy. The quasars that formed in the first billion years of the universe are more mysterious, though, with even the nature of the surrounding gas still unknown.

Above, an artist’s impression shows a primordial quasar as it might have been, surrounded by sheets of gas, dust, stars and early star clusters. Exacting observations of three distant quasars now indicate emission of very specific colors of the element iron. These Hubble Space Telescope observations, which bolster recent results from the WMAP mission, indicate that a whole complete cycle of stars was born, created this iron, and died within the first few hundred million years of the universe.

The University of Tokyo and the Japan folded paper (origami) plane society hopes to fly a paper airplane from the International Space Station to Earth. The plane will be 30-40cm long and weigh about 30 grams. A University of Tokyo research group has successfully designed a special paper plane model that was able to withstand a mach 7 high velocity stream for 10 seconds. The experimental plane was about one-fifth the size and withstood temperatures as high as 300C without burning up. The group plans to fly the plane by throwing it.

The actual conditions for the plan from the International Space Station, 400kms from the earth, will be speeds up to mach 20. Only after entering the earth’s atmosphere at an altitude of 80kms will it slow to a paltry mach 7.

NEC has developed a wireless camera that can be powered from a fluorescent light by simply attaching a ring-shaped component for power acquisition to the bulb. The camera only requires fluorescent lighting equipment with a straight bulb to provide a video system without the necessity for a power supply installation work. Sharp unveiled the power supply technology used in this wireless camera in January 2006. Based on the electromagnetic induction, the camera obtains power by using the magnetic field generated by the AC source (45-100kHz) in the fluorescent light. Basically, the new NEC wireless camera is operable at 120mW. It is provided with a function to automatically adjust the frequency of shooting video in response to the power supply from the fluorescent light. The function makes it possible to shoot and transmit images in the optimum quality with the use of any commercially-available inverter fluorescent light with a straight bulb while eliminating the need of manually adjusting the power consumption of the camera.

The NEC wireless camera powered from a fluorescent light shoots images every 10 seconds. It supports VGA (640 x 480), QVGA (320 x 240) and QQVGA (160 x 120) resolutions. An IEEE802.11b-compliant wireless LAN is employed for the image transmission. The NEC camera will be exhibited at iExpo2007 in Tokyo Big Sight from Dec 5-7, 2007.

This brand is known for stylish waterproof gizmos and so the latest from then is also a music player that is a must while indulging in peaceful stress-relieving dip. The Twinbird’s water proof MP3/WMA/CD player christened as Zabady is a sleek, good-looking portable gadget that can be carried where ever you desire …..a bath room, pool, hot tub, or even kitchen. The most useful feature is a USB port inside the sealed case that allows the Zabady to play back tunes from a connected drive of up to 2GB. Here’s a more splashing feature - the IPX7 waterproofing means the player is not only splash-resistant, but can also survive immersion in 1m of water for up to half an hour. So I guess it doesn’t matter if you accidentally drop it on the tub and then forget about it too. BUT pray to god that you realize before it’s too late. It also sports an LCD for displaying track information from digital files. All juiced up this portable music player can dole out tunes for about four hours.

Weighing just 900g, its dimensions are 180 x 80 x 190mm (width x depth x height). However it seems that as of yet Zabady is meant for Japanese shores only and sells for ¥21,000 ($180).
