Can it be true? Is the Googlephone nigh at hand? Not that we haven’t been hearing this time after time (after time after time, etc.), but we’ve actually got some hot news from a number of very trustworthy sources about Google’s plans for the mobile space. Namely, Google’s mobile device platform is well on its way, and will be announced in the very near future.

We understand that the “Gphone OS” (our name for it, not theirs) began development after Google’s very quiet 2005 acquisition of mobile software company Android, started by Danger cofounder and former-prez / CEO Andy Rubin. At Google, Andy’s team has developed a Linux-based mobile device OS (no surprise) which they’re currently shopping around to handset makers and carriers on the premise of providing a flexible, customizable system — with really great Google integration, of course.

As for the timeframe on this thing, we keep hearing Google will announce its mobile plans some time post-Labor Day (September 3rd); from what we’ve heard Google isn’t necessarily working on hardware of its own, but is definitely working with OEMs and ODMs to get them to put the Gphone OS on upcoming devices. Think of it more in terms of Windows Mobile or Palm OS (in the early days) — Google wants to supply the platform, but we don’t think they want to sell hardware. Still, don’t entirely rule out the idea. Andy Rubin knows how to make a device and put it in peoples’ hands, so nothing is impossible on the hardware side. Either way, we’re totally stoked to peep the software, we’ve been waiting for the Googlephone for years on years.

Still, we can’t help wondering what El Jobso thinks about all this. Apple has been so buddy-buddy with Google lately, especially on the iPhone — and now Apple’s mobile team is on the verge of outright competition with one of its closest partners. We know that’s how the industry works, but it’s got to sting a little, you know?

Sony today announced the development of a bio battery1 that generates electricity from carbohydrates (sugar) utilizing enzymes as its catalyst, through the application of power generation principles found in living organisms. Test cells of this bio battery have achieved power output of 50 mW, currently the world’s highest level for passive-type bio batteries. The output of these test cells is sufficient to power music play back on a memory-type Walkman. In order to realize the world’s highest power output, Sony developed a system of breaking down sugar to generate electricity that involves efficiently immobilizing enzymes and the mediator (electronic conduction materials) while retaining the activity of the enzymes at the anode.

Sony also developed a new cathode structure which efficiently supplies oxygen to the electrode while ensuring that the appropriate water content is maintained. Optimizing the electrolyte for these two technologies has enabled these power output levels to be reached. Sugar is a naturally occurring energy source produced by plants through photosynthesis. It is therefore regenerative, and can be found in most areas of the earth, underlining the potential for sugar-based bio batteries as an ecologically-friendly energy device of the future.

A mod chipping company called Team Symbiote has apparently created an application for owners of its Wii mod chip that enables the console to play back DVDs. This may not be the first mod to enable DVD playback, but since Nintendo still hasn’t got around to providing the console with playback capabilities, we thought it’d be worth bringing it up again. Nintendo, how about hurrying up and making it so normal people don’t have to buy dodgy chips to play a DVD or two on their console?

Mercedes C-Clas Hybrid

Posted In: News by Alex

Employing prototype hybrid technology, Siemens on Thursday showed off a modified Mercedes C-Class Sport Coupe that boasts faster acceleration, more torque — and better fuel economy — than its gasoline-powered equivalent. The demo Mercedes C-Class Sport Coupe car packs its electric power into a lithium-ion battery in its trunk. This type of battery can hold more energy yet weigh less than batteries used in today’s hybrids, but it is susceptible to overheating. Siemens is using the vehicle as a test for its battery cooling systems. The coupe employs two types of electric motors within the same vehicle. A parallel hybrid electric motor integrated into the vehicle’s powertrain can power the car on its own or assist the gasoline engine. A second side mounted motor can start the gasoline engine while the other electric motor is driving the car, and bring the engine up to speed.

That ability to have high-torque electric startup and a boost in power when accelerating gives the modified Mercedes C-Class Sport Coupe its performance edge. The coupe reaches about 62 mph in six seconds — a second faster than a gasoline equivalent with the same 1.8 liter, 4-cylinder engine. The vehicle uses 24 percent less gasoline than a standard Mercedes model and the demo car can exceed 35 mph in electric-only mode. The cost vehicles battery prices it out of the market reach at present. Siemens hope battery prices to fall in the next three to four years and work done on this demonstration has validated the rest of the vehicle’s technology.
